No News Is Good News

Particularly in our case, if I’m not blogging it means I’m spending time on other things to get us moving. We now officially have a board of directors (Yay!) This means we can do fun things like apply for grants and are now an official organization!

We have also purchased a set of Battle ropes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6HDPhJwYJs) which we are really excited to bring to our next class!

Stay warm with all this cold weather and snow!

Collard Greens, Yum!

For everyone trying to get more greens in 2014!

Putney Farm

It’s traditional in the south to serve slow-cooked, smoky collard greens to celebrate the New Year, and we are all for it. But frankly, collards are so good, we enjoy them any time we can get them. Here in California, that usually means winter after a frost. And while we have had almost no winter rains so far, it has gotten cold enough that we saw some collards at the farmers market. We bought a big batch, cooked them up for the New Years and are still enjoying them. We never seem to get enough greens.

collards2colards3collards4Unfamiliar with collard greens? Basically a forerunner of kale (and in the same family) collards are big leafy greens with larger, rounder leaves than kale and with a bigger, earthier flavor. The main differences (that we know of) is that collards need to cook longer than most types of kale and loses its color…

It Feels Like a Snow Day!

After waking up at 6 this morning to help shovel my parents out of the driveway I have decided today is a hot coco, warm shower, curl up with a book kind of day. Which really means it’s an update everyone on Parkinsons Fitness kind of day.

Other than snuggling under the covers today we are extending invitations to prospective board members and fine tuning our program. We have added agility ladder work and plan on doing more fun obstacle courses and games for next week.

Stay happy and healthy,

   Julia

Happy Holidays

I hope all of you had happy and healthy holidays this year! And New Years is just around the corner.

This morning before our post-Christmas debrief Keith and I walked up to the top of Abbott Hall in Marblehead, MA to help crank the clock for the week. Abbott hall has one of the few crank clocks left in the country and the steep walk up offers stunning views of Marblehead and the surrounding towns. Today we felt the quick nip of the wind and woke up real fast. It was a beautiful piece of history to be a part of and a great way to start the day. If you’re ever up there don’t forget to look for our names!

Here’s a look at Abbott Hall and the tower we had to climb up!

Back to Business:

Last Monday we had a great class of obstacle courses and games designed to get people active and having a good time with new challenges. For race one practiced going around cones, heel touches, walking through an agility ladder and punching a boxing bag. For the second race we worked on upper body strength with a relay race to a wall of the gym ending in wall push ups. And last but not least we had a memorable time in the one-minute race. For this one we lined up on one side of the gym and had to try and figure out how fast to walk in order to reach the other side of the gym closest to the minute mark.

To help us out with all of these games we had two special guests. Linda and Keith’s son Max and my brother Mike who were both home for the holidays.

Just to keep you updated even more, on January 2nd we will be coming to Peabody for a mini class! More details to come on exactly when and where it will be but its something not to be missed.

Have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season,

     Julia at Parkinsons Fitness

Where have we been?

Hi Everyone,

We’ve been MIA from the internet for about a month but for a good reason. Julia has become a certified fitness instructor and has shown us some great new moves. Keith has gone to speak with PT classes about having Parkinson’s and has continued to come up with new great ideas for our future. Linda has been studying up for her certification and is getting potential board members in line. We also have some promising new classes that will be starting in January!
